NEW SONG – ‘BE MY SAVIOUR’ - SELECTED FOR ‘STORMBREAKER’ FILM
This is very exciting! One of Colin’s new tracks – ‘Be My Saviour’ – which has already been recorded and will be included on his new album, has been confirmed for the closing credits of the ‘Stormbreaker’ movie based on the first of Anthony Horovitz's huge selling Alex Ryder series of books. The movie is due for release in the UK on July 21st, and in America on August 18th. Other featured artists on the soundtrack are Gorrilaz and Kaiser Chiefs.
The film stars Ewan MacGregor, Alicia Silverstone, Mickey Rourke, Stephen Fry & Robbie Coltrane, among others. Full details can be found by visiting the Internet Movie Database.
Some of you may have heard Colin recently performing an acoustic version of this song at his recent Scottish Parliament Gig and at the Red Cross fundraiser in Edinburgh last month.
COLIN PLAYS RED CROSS FUNDRAISER
Colin will play an acoustic set in Edinburgh for The British Red Cross on April 20th. Support on the night will come from Shrinking Violet. Here’s what Colin said abut the event.
I'm delighted to be involved in this British Red Cross series of events and be a part of helping to showcase the issues that they are involved with and the incredible work they do.
I've been involved in other fundraising events and all of these were reactions to a world more and more affected by natural disasters and conflicts, which the Red Cross see from the front line. This gig should be a good night - intimate and informal, which you don’t get a chance to do so often - it will be different and a laugh!
I'm also looking forward to playing some new songs from my forthcoming new album in this format, and lots of audience participation I hope!

MULL HISTORICAL SOCIETY NAME CHANGE TO “COLIN MACINTYRE”
Dear Society
This is a message that i've been wanting to post for a while and it is only a positive thing, so dont take it any other way...i have an addiction to Vicks vaporub...no, well actually, very possibly! but what i really want to say is something different: that from now on i will be writing, releasing, recording, gigging (and living..) under my own name, instead of under the Mull Historical Society pseudonym.
It’s important for me that you, my fanbase, realises that nothing has changed here on a creative front, or on an identity one, for me or you. YOU are still “The Society” and I’M still from Mull. By dropping the MHS name I’ve not suddenly gone solo – as you know, I already WAS solo as MHS. In fact, funnily enough, my original demos for 'Loss' were sent out to labels initially under my own name before i got the shits and decided that i needed to hide behind a more ambiguous name, so now its come full cycle.
In the 5 years that i've been making records and gigging etc, in many interviews i've done i've always felt that because of the ambiguous name i chose to release under i've had to overly explain that i'm not a 'band', and at least i dont have to do that anymore! MHS is not gone, or splitting up, because as i've already said, i cant split up with myself!
What I’m doing, by changing to my own name, is part of the continuation of my creative journey, and I wont be doing anything differently from the way I’ve operated before, except that I think this change will help me grow more as an artist. For some time now I’ve thought about doing this. But I’ll always play songs live at future gigs from ALL of my previous albums, i'm too proud of them not to. And maybe it was also time for me to give the 'real' MHS their name back!
i want all of you to hear things from me first, that is the most important thing to me. I gather some of you may have been aware about this change this week from my US label, Wired Set (www.wiredset.com), who are releasing 'This Is Hope' in America on 20/12/05 under my name, with great new artwork by Society member Jo Burton. She will be doing more.
okay, back to the music!

COLIN IN THE STUDIO AGAIN - RECORDING DIARY 2 - THE VAPORUB SESSIONS
So i'm in a recording studio in deepest, darkest England trying to get rid of a dry cough to finish my vocals in time (i fly to America tmrw night...pity the other passengers...i've also had a curry tonight). i'll be here all night i reckon - finishing 3 more tracks for my new album, the songs are blaring out of the speakers and well, I'm so fucking happy by how it all sounds. My head is just out of a bowl of water after inhaling vaporub - i recommend it - and i've also just been singing through a distorted guitar hole, i recommend that also if you're stuck for something to do.
Songs completed this session are:
I Dont Have You To Ask
What Kind Of Man (The Art Of Disappearing)
Be My Saviour
Needless to say i'm very excited by the songs that i've written and am now recording for my 4th album – it will be released in ‘06. On this record i'll be working with another producer for the first time - Lemon Jelly's Nick Franglen - and it's going great, splashing on the vaporub, throwing out melodies. You'll hear it all soon. It feels fresh but it feels like me.
More info on the next record, and an update on my recording diary and all that i'll be getting up to, will obviously be coming up on this site v soon and on my blog.
Merry Xmas & Happy New Year...i'm off to America for the happy holidays to start a campaign to run for President but i'll have a few stocking stuffers on the site for you for xmas.
Ignore all spelling mistakes..and Vicks Vaporub-friendly advertising.....i'm getting back to the music and am now pressing 'add post' and hopefully going to get to bed this week!”
Cheers,
Colinxx

COLIN BACK IN THE STUDIO
Bow To The Ford Focus God – A Week’s Recording Diary.
Dear all,
AS some of you might be aware from reading my studio diary for my last album (featured on this site somewhere), the last time, for the transportation to the recordings of THIS IS HOPE in The Strongroom studio in East London, I hired a Vauxhall Corsa; for my new album it seems like I’ve jumped ship, Ford is my new God. Well, for 2 weeks anyway.
I’ve started recording. My months of supposed hibernation – doing things like writing new songs, searching for inspiration, moving back to Glasgow (although I still seem to spend half my time in London), trying to write novels, spending some time in the U.S., reading loads, going to gigs, trying to widen my creative community (among Ford Focus drivers/songwriters), playing in gigantic revolving gerbil wheels – is coming to an end: it’s time for the songs to come out, just in time for Winter. I always thought David Attenborough said that hibernation worked the other way around, but then what does he know about the smooth-runnings and the loud indicators of the Ford Focus?
AS some of you might also be aware, for most of this year I’ve been working on my new material and pulling together a silver briefcase-load of songs to reach your ears sometime soon. But in the 2 months or so – since I got back from America really in August – I’ve felt that I have the album done, all the contenders are written, although I’m sure I’ll write one or two more. I have the album title too. So it’s time to move on. Time to call Avis rent-a-car.
I’m aware I’ve described the process of my previous albums before in a similar way, but then you’ll just have to trust me that I’m very excited by my new songs. As always, its important to me to move-on, continue to develop and stretch myself as a writer and artist. So, transitions in my choice of transportation device aside, that’s what I strive to do with my next album:
surprise myself, surprise you. God, 4 albums? I’d feel like the Beatles! Albeit, with more marginal sales (and transportation..), but I live in hope.
I’ve been to a few weddings this year and I think that’s been as big an inspiration as anything, its cemented something that I’ve had in my mind for a while: I want to make some music that makes you want to hit the dance floor. I’m not talking hardcore club music, but I want more of a groove, just something different sonically from what I’ve done before. Which has led to a big decision: I’m working with another Producer for the first time. Its not easy, being something of a control freak (so I’m told) to let go of the control, or the freakery – I just thought I was a perfectionist, but it seems like the reigns are flapping and, most importantly, its sounding fucking great!! More freaky! 3 songs are done. I have demos of another 20-odd, so there’s much more to do; much more control to freak over, but, in the end, the songs will stand up for themselves anyway I hope.
So, its with all this in mind – and “Women’s Hour” or something similar blaring out from a crackling MW radio signal about a story on the prospects of the first ever female German Chancellor – that I returned to London early on Friday morning after a week recording on the south coast of England. My eyes were stinging and my body aching (it was a full-on week) and then I control-freaked a bit, again, when I encountered a car full of what seemed like joy riders careering around a roundabout somewhere beyond Brighton, obviously searching for perfection themselves in their 80-mile-an-hour cornering technique. They pulled up alongside me and I imagined my Crimewatch debut but then they moved on. I flipped on the CD of the rough mixes of the first 3 songs. Their first plays to the outside world. But at 2am it seems to be a world that’s dark and unpopulated? Portsmouth is next the signs say. I turn onto the A3 after missing it the first time and send the Focus into overdrive, Martin Brundle needn’t get out of bed, but they’re surprisingly nippy, even if they’re not German.
Fuck, somewhere passing through the fog around Guildford, I think it sounds good. This week has been cool and lots of fun; as well as the more usual instruments I’ve played a harmonium and a sitar for the first time, the contents of a toolbox and the coins in my pockets too. I like trying new instruments and recording new things, it’s what helps make me feel like a musician, as opposed to a call-centre employee. Even the Focus’s keys have been rattled near a microphone. It’s been a great week. Every other future listen I ever have of these songs wont sound like they do now, because this is the first time I really hear them, out of my head so to speak, even though they’re still rough mixes. Still on the A3 and then a speed camera flashes. Who cares. Who gives a fuck? I have my songs! Am I aloud to sing over my own songs with my arm in the air and munching a banana? I think it’s a good sign. It’ll make for a good photo on the speed cam. I can feel the smugness of the Focus itself, now
listening with pride at the sound of its own keys coming through the speakers. One of the songs reminds me of something off Loss, the other 2 feel different.
More will be recorded soon. Songs, not speed-cam photos. It’s only now, back in London, that I realize I’ve lost weight. Not something I can afford to do. I need to gorge over the weekend, more bananas, put the weight back on, because I’m back there next week. More info will be on my diary as things develop. Including a website revamp, with more audio goodies. Some photos and short films from these sessions – hopefully none from the Sussex Constabulary – are to follow. Something new happened this week, something that’s never happened to me in the studio before. It was a good thing.
Track 1: The Water
Track 2: I Can, I Will
Track 3: Famous For Being Famous

AN UPDATE FROM COLIN
Dear Society
I wanted to give you an update of what's happening and where I'm at.
Firstly, I'll deal with the recent past: It's been a bit of a frustrating time recently - I wanted to apologise to those who had bought tickets for the cancelled English tour - I wanted you to know that the shows were cancelled due to circumstances out with my control. And i cant wait to get back out there soon.
Also, you should know that the release of "This Is Hope" in the UK wasn't handled in a way that i wanted - but, it is the music BUSINESS after all, and sometimes you do your bit - write the songs and record them - and then you hand it over, in the case of the last album, the rest was a bit messed up. But you live and learn. I'd rather just move onwards and upwards.
Anyway, I wanted to be straight with you. It's really important to me to be honest with you all and that you also get the picture straight from from me - because i want to keep making music that you'll get into even when we're all being wheeled around the nursing homes.
So here's the future. The good news is that i've moved on and have been working flat out on writing my next album. I think i've learned a lot from the first 3. And also, "This Is Hope" is coming out in America on Wired Set Records, which
i'm delighted about. I have a title already for my next album which is giving me a theme to hang the words onto. At the moment I have way too much music written, but that means the best can rise to the top hopefully. It's all beginning to really flow. I'm just letting it happen. I've been working each day on music and novels and they seem to sit side by side quite well.
I suppose to sum up (and now i'm sounding like a politician at election time!..) - if I were a fan of my music I'd be pissed off about the lack of touring/singles released from the last album - but you can know that it hasn't been of my doing - but I'd be more excited that another album is under way and will be hitting between the ears sooner than would have been expected.
Another big piece of good news for me - and as a result, hopefully you - is that i have new management, which is going really well. It feels like a fresh start and the beginning of phase 2 for me. Manifesto over.
So there wont be too many gigs this year as a result - but then i've done the festivals for 5 years running, so it's no big deal to sit a year out and get the record right. I'm really enjoying the new songs. Every day i'm (watching
old people playing crown green bowls) and pushing myself to the limit and working on the ideas that will become a CD some time soon. Some records seem to become a quest and that's what i feel i'm on. I'll be posting up regular updates on my creativity as it hits the fan and also on how the album's shaping up.
To the friends in my head
Let it never be said
That I Work. That I Work.......
Public Service Announcement over.
Cheers!

COLIN TO PLAY TSUNAMI BENEFIT GIG AT S.E.C.C. GLASGOW, 19th FEB
The Concert For Tsunami Relief will be held in Glasgow SECC Hall 4 on Saturday 19th February 2005. Here’s what Colin had to say:
“I'm delighted to be a part of this appeal. I was in the states at the time of the disaster happening and the CNN coverage seemed to make the story more dramatic. So many tragic stories. Its terrific to be able to join with other artists/promoters to do something for the people who have suffered.
I am also planning a collection into the (smaller) dogs wig at the King Tuts show on the same night. The tuts show will be a later show - so that I can do a Phil Collins-crossing-the-Atlantic-type-dash-at Live Aid across Glasgow, from playing at the SECC to King Tuts. I have a (lot!) more hair than him though.. especially right now... It will be a memorable evening for a cause too big to ignore.”
Tickets will go on sale today, 10am, and will only be available from the SECC Box Office ( 0870 040 4000 ), from SECC Xtra at St. Enoch Centre and www.secctickets.com
Prices are £28.50 for standing & seating, with a limited number of premium seats available at £40. Doors will be 6pm

MHS VOTED NUMBER 12 IN THE LIST’S 50 BEST SCOTTISH BANDS POLL
Colin MacIntyre played a short acoustic set last Wednesday to kick off the List’s party announcing the 50 Best Scottish Bands Of All Time, following a lengthy public vote. Also playing on the night were Snow Patrol, Eugene Kelly and Idlewild. All artists played a Scottish cover, with Colin opting for Some Candy Talking, originally by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Here’s what Colin had to say on hearing the news that MHS had came in at 12th in the poll. See the full list by clicking on the graphic (left)
“Thanks to everyone who voted for me. I'm honoured to be in at number 12! Its all subjective I suppose, but being as high as 12 says as much for you - the fanbase - as it is does for me. It was a memorable night at King Tuts for the announcement on Wednesday. I was nervous before doing a Jesus and Mary Chain cover, but I've been working on growing the hair for it, so I just about pulled it off I think! Looking forward to this year and the gigs coming up - I might play The Mary Chain song on tour - and with a new single out in the spring, this news seems like a great platform to kick-start this year. Cheers and see you out there!” Colin
