Colin MacIntyre / Mull Historical Society releases new mash-up of footie anthems ahead of Scotland’s European Championship opener with host country Germany.
The music release comes only days after Colin’s new novel, WHEN THE NEEDLE DROPS was published (Black & White Publishing). The song is in-part inspired by the 1982 Scotland team with John Gordon Sinclair and BA Robertson cult classic, We Have A Dream. Put out ahead of the opening tie of the European Championships (Euros) against host nation, Germany on 14th June at the Allianz Arena, Munich, home of the legendary Bayern Munich.
Football is in acclaimed musician and writer Colin MacIntyre’s blood, with his father, the late Kenny MacIntyre, a passionate and briefly professional player, and his brother Kenny now a football journalist for the BBC. Some of Colin’s most treasured memories from his youth are of trips down from Mull to watch Scotland at Hampden, and his dad’s playing career meant Colin even got the chance to play with some ex and current professionals — Charlie Nicholas, Ally McCoist, Pat Nevin, Ian McCall and Davie Moyes — who all feature in the song lyrics and have also graced Mull Historical Society tournament teams in the past.
Colin even spent a year training for Queens Park FC, under the robust-regime of the infamous Eddie Hunter. But in the end, after running up and down every step of the national stadium but never actually playing a game, music won out. Nine albums later, this new song has come about after Colin performed a mash-up of ‘We Have A Dream’ and ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ live on BBC Scotland’s ‘Off The Ball’ with Tam Cowan and Stuart Cosgrove.
Colin explains: “The day after I performed the mash-up on BBC Radio Scotland, I was appearing at the Bloody Scotland festival and on the way home I couldn’t stop myself penning some new lyrics, to encompass the legends of Scotland Teams’ old, alongside those of the current team. In my mind I imagined them all on the same pitch — and so a challenge was set by Stuart & Tam and an idea born. Two of my very earliest memories, are of marvelling live at Archie Gemmill’s famous goal against Holland at the World Cup in 1978, and loving BA Robertson’s hit song of the era, ‘Bang Bang’ — so it seems fitting that I’ve now been inspired by both of those in this song.”
Colin’s old school even features in the track in the form of Tobermory High School Pipe Band, led by local Mull musician Callum MacLean (son of the legendary and greatly respected accordionist) and MacIntyre’s 96-year-old grandmother Mary Kirsop – a huge football fan herself – even makes an appearance on the track, last heard on the third Mull Historical Society album. Colin’s godson is the young player starring in the video, with the famous Jim Baxter No.6 shirt.
“It’s also the very first song I’ve recorded in my new home studio”, adds MacIntyre. “But — rather fittingly for a Beatles-obsessed kid — was mastered at Abbey Road Studio.”
